Two-alarm fire in Coquitlam apartment complex; 100 evacuated
Feb 16, 2015

Multiple apartment units have been damaged and dozens of firefighters were called out deal with large fire at a Coquitlam apartment complex Monday afternoon.

The building at 2915 Glen Drive continued to burn as the afternoon rush hour got underway, and a large crowd of onlookers watched from a distance.

By 6 p.m., crews were still fighting the fire in the four-storey wood frame building, while orange flames were still shooting through the roof.

There are no reports of injuries and the cause is still unclear, however, a source told the Tri-Cities NOW the blaze was caused by a barbeque.

A City of Coquitlam press release is requesting displaced residents to report to the Reception Centre at the Pinetree Community Centre (1260 Pinetree Way). The reception centre is expected to be operational by 6:30 pm.

The city will be posting updates to an emergency info line at 604-927-4357 (HELP) and www.coquitlam.ca

As many as 100 people could be displaced by the fire that broke out after 4 p.m.

Zainav Alrammahi lives in the ground floor where near where unit where the fire broke out.

She said she didn’t hear any alarms and was alerted to fire by her brother.

Her family got out safe, but as she watched crews douse water on the building, she figured she’s lost everything.

“It’s so awful, you see you’ve lost everything,” Alrammahi told the Tri-Cities NOW.

She also took video of the scene before any fire crews arrived, which showed a large portion of the building already in flames.

The 19 year-old student said she feels lucky to be alive.

Alrammahi’s family had only been renting the unit for six months and are now left homeless.

Gloria Halfkenny lives in the same area of the building, but was hopeful her unit was spared.

While she watched firefighters attack the flames, she appeared more concerned for her fellow neighbours than property, noting the building is filled with kids and families.

“I just pray to god everybody got out,” Halfkenny said.

At Monday evening council meeting, Mayor Richard Stewart addressed the fire, suggesting it was very challening to fight.

"We wish the very best to the displaced residents of this building," he said.
